Abstract

The article tries to reveal why employee appraisal system despite many theoretical benefits activates detrimental effects for employees and the company itself. Psychological aspects of evaluation, feedback as a basis for appraisal interview and interpersonal skills of managers as appraisers have been focused on. To some extent such organizational aspects as: type of appraisal interview, type of evaluation and implementation of the process have been discussed. Issues of designing appraisal system, questionnaire for appraisal, have not been author’s field of interest. Apart from making effort to find causes of appraisal systems failure, an attempt was made to indicate good practices, which foster effectiveness of appraisal both in the dimension of motivating employees and company financial ratings. In the analysis both psychological and management theories as well as workforce management experts’ opinions have been considered.
