The financial situation of households is analysed on the basis of their incomes. Older people do not form a homogeneous group in terms of their financial situation. Varying income levels of senior citizens’ households lead to marked differences in the ways and purposes of spending money. Furthermore, these households also have a particular structure of expenditure because of a small number of household members and a high proportion of fixed expenditure in the total spending. In these households, housing and health expenses account for a large share of expenditure. Currently, food expenditure decreases, while housing and health spending grows considerably.
The aim of this paper is to examine the financial situation of the elderly. The structure of the article is as follows. After explaining the research conceptualisation and the research sample selection and characteristics, the article discusses income levels, self-assessed financial situation, saving behaviours, borrowing and ways of managing cash in the households of elderly people in Poland. Finally, conclusions are presented.
